Dasa Sahitya (ದಾಸ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ) represents the profound literary contribution of the Bhakti movement, crafted by devotees in reverence to Lord Vishnu and his various incarnations. The term 'Dasa' translates to 'servant' in Kannada, while 'sahitya' means 'literature.' The Haridasas, or 'servants of God,' played a pivotal role as preachers of Bhakti, utilizing their literary talents to express devotion to Lord Vishnu. This body of work is collectively termed Dasa Sahitya and is primarily articulated in the Kannada language.

The Haridasas significantly enriched the cultural tapestry of Karnataka's music scene, leaving an enduring impact on its religious and cultural landscape. They effectively communicated essential teachings through musical expression, engaging the hearts of ordinary people. Similar to other eminent figures in Indian classical music, these scholars traditionally offered pooja to Vishnu through a musical form known as naadopasana. It is noted that the divine is celebrated as Samagana priya; hence, musical devotion is esteemed as a preferred route to connect with the divine.

The Haridasa movement was instrumental in advancing Kannada literature by generating an extensive repertoire of devotional works encompassing verses, hymns, and musical compositions, which prominently highlighted the Dvaita philosophy established by Saint Madhvacharya. This body of devotional literature is known as Dasa Sahitya or dasara padagalu (literature of the dasas). The various works are typically referred to as Devaranamas, meaning 'names of the Lord,' and are composed to exalt Lord Vishnu. At their core, these compositions emphasize Hari Bhakti (devotion to God) and frequently draw upon themes from Hindu mythology alongside the philosophical underpinnings of Dvaita.

Notable Haridasas like Purandara Dasa and Kanaka Dasa infused everyday tales, morals, and virtues into their Devaranamas, employing simple Kannada to ensure accessibility for all. This approach was strategic, aiming to educate the broader populace on the significance of consciousness (jnana), devotion (bhakti), ethics, and Hindu traditions. Their hymns (padas), characterized by diverse musical scales (ragas), inspired fervor among listeners. As proponents of religious reform, Haridasas advocated for detachment (vairagya), effectively employing similes and metaphors within their compositions to convey this message.

In addition to devotional songs, Kanaka Dasa made significant contributions through five classical literary works in the kavya style. Other notable composers such as Jagannathadasa, Vijaya Dasa, and Gopaladasa also played a crucial role in enriching Kannada literature.

The compositions can be classified into three main categories:

  • Kavya or poetic compositions
  • Tatva or philosophical compositions
  • General compositions
